Shauna Burns - featured on Podcast #17

  • LINK to Podcast #17: "Betty's Piano Pop 101 - Beyond Tori Mix!"

  • Shauna Burns
  • sent me a copy of her CD "Every Thought" a couple of months ago and I have had plenty of time to soak all the beauty of her lovely piano and lilting voice. Her sound will remind many of the gentle playing and lyrical poetry of Tori Amos at first listen. Her vocals are clear and comfortably easy for the listening. I have come to appreciate the songs even more after repeated rotations.

The melodies are smart, quirky and very memorable. I find myself humming along without even knowing it. Most of the tunes are simple piano and singing, with some resonant electric elements from time to time, especially on the last track "Maryland" which was featured on my podcast.

Shauna's influences of Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan are apparent in her lyrical stylings and emotive whispers and vulnerable falsettos. Fans of Sarah and Tori should thoroughly enjoy this new emerging artist.

Below are excerpts from other reviews of Shauna's music:

"As soon as “Ghosts and Vampires” began, I thought, “Shauna Burns is the missing link between Loreena McKennitt and Tori Amos.” Sparkling piano and a slight Celtic cast underlie lyrics like “please don’t buy me that foo foo dress” and “find your savior in a cereal box in a lane at a supermarket.” One of the more powerful girl-with-piano submissions we’ve gotten; each song is like a little monologue by a short-story character." Meredith, 75 or Less

"Beautiful cascading piano keys drip on the opener and then Shauna’s ethereal vocals come forth like a brimming cup of coffee. ...Shauna Burns allows her singing voice do the talking as she whisks us away with wispy and insightful lyrics. Pouring the emotions out on the table she casts a magical net... for a new fangled fusion that will ignite a spark that will be hard to replicate. Perfect." Smother.net

"Her acoustic piano-driven music is very stream of consciousness, emotive and moving. Its power calls for your willingness to suspend thought, to free-float on this stream of thick beautiful sound and let it take you as it wills. Even when the lyrical intention is clear, Burns deliberately chooses to phrase the words in such a way as to strip them of conventional meaning, challenging you again to let go, to follow her down a mad rabbit trail of melodic sound, free-falling into your own mind. Wild, I know, but fresh, fearless and free." Kevan Breitinger, Indie-Music.com

"b-warned": new solo artist sia (of zero 7) will take your breath away...

  • Sia Furler
  • of the stellar chillout band
  • Zero 7
  • has released her mesmerizing debut album entitled "Colour the Small One".
I have had this CD on constant play around the house and have discovered that it only gets more intriquing with every rotation.

Reminiscent of the airy pop vocals of Dido, Jem or St.Etienne's Sarah Cracknell, Sia reaches an impressive level of sophistication for a new solo artist. Melodies are complex, layered and luscious. "Colour the Small One" is already getting rave reviews amongst a diverse audience of musical aficionados. I add my vote of a strong four and a half out of five stars!!
